FAWN FACTS

(PHOTO FROM NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC)

I'VE BEEN DOING A LOT OF READING FOR WORK.  MOST OF THESE FACTS ARE FROM THE BOOK BY DR. LEONARD LEE RUE III CALLED "WAY OF THE WHITETAIL".  I FOUND THEM VERY FASCINATING,  AND HOPEFULLY YOU DO TOO!

FAWN FACTS:

A WHITE TAILED DEER FAWN CAN STAND 20 MINUTES AFTER BIRTH & WALK IN 4 HOURS.

ACCORDING TO RESEARCH:
A FAWN'S HEARTBEAT WILL TEMPORARILY  DROP & BREATHING IS REDUCED WHEN ALARMED.  THIS REDUCES THE POSSIBILITY OF PREDATORS DETECTING THEM.

AFTER 6 DAYS OR SO, A FAWN IS ABLE TO RUN FROM A HUMAN RATHER THAN JUST FREEZE & HIDE.

COYOTES ACCOUNT FOR UP TO 70% OF FAWN PREDATION.

BLACK BEARS WILL OFTEN VISIT A KNOWN FAWN AREA ANNUALLY TO LOCATE POSSIBLE NEWBORNS.

TWIN FAWNS ARE HIDDEN IN SEPARATE LOCATIONS.  SO IF DISCOVERED, THEY AREN'T BOTH IN DANGER.

A DOE CAN NOT IDENTIFY HER FAWN BY APPEARANCE OR SOUND, ONLY BY SMELL.

Sword Sights

Our new archery supply company catalog just arrived in the mail a few days ago.  Right off the bat, my husband & I noticed an ad for sight company that we've never heard of!

Sword sights claims that they have an edge by "Cutting the Competition".  They are made in the USA and located in Northwest Ohio.  They've been around since 2009, but had a change of ownership & location.

They state in print that they back their products 100% & carry a broad spectrum of sights.    Take a look at their site & let us know if you'd like to see us offer any of these sights.

Brusher for rent

We are building some new tower deer stands this spring at our land up north.  It's a great time to get hunting land work done & make improvements.  I just want to mention a recent discovery I made.

You can rent a self propelled brush cutter at LaRose Greenhouse in Finlayson.  The Kawasaki DR is an All Terrain Mower.  The cost is $30 for half a day & $50 for the whole day.

Just think of the shooting lanes you could cut!  This would also keep your four wheeler trails open.  One thing about this unit, is that it'll fit into hard to reach places on your property.  It also won't sink or get stuck as bad as heavy machinery, such as tractors.  It's cheaper on gas to haul this puppy, verses a tractor.

It's easy to get busy, let summer slip by, and all of the sudden it's deer opener!  So, start thinking of what you CAN do right now.  It will help pass them time, make you feel proactive & you'll be ready to rock this fall.

Griz attack

I found a captivating story on Addicted to Hunting.  I still think bowhunters should be allowed to carry handguns.  This is a good example why!

For some good reading, especially if you're hunting out west or to Canada:

Bear Attacks: Their Causes and Avoidance
by Stephen Herrero

Bear Attacks: The Deadly Truth
by James Gary Shelton

Blindsided by Jim Cole

I read an animal attack book from the library years ago.  One of the things that has stuck with me is that often times a mother can fend off animals with a broom!  Our maternal instinct to protect can be very effective.  But in reality,  each situation calls for different reactions.  Just hope that if it happens to you, you make the right move or lack there of.

DEERFEST

DEERFEST

I have never heard of it until today.  The dates for 2011 are July 22-24.  It all takes place in OshKosh, Wisconsin.   Did I hear somebody say "road trip"?

A few seminars listed that caught my attention are Shed Dogs, Deer Vision, & actual Food Plot Demonstrations!!!

Big names are listed, like Lee & Tiffany, Michael Waddell, and my faves The Droptine Divas.  Have I caught your interest yet???

Well, how about this....3D shoots, tournaments, and a pop up course!  I love that it's not just a show that you go walk around.  You'll actually get to shoot.
