FAWN FACTS

(PHOTO FROM NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC)

I'VE BEEN DOING A LOT OF READING FOR WORK.  MOST OF THESE FACTS ARE FROM THE BOOK BY DR. LEONARD LEE RUE III CALLED "WAY OF THE WHITETAIL".  I FOUND THEM VERY FASCINATING,  AND HOPEFULLY YOU DO TOO!

FAWN FACTS:

A WHITE TAILED DEER FAWN CAN STAND 20 MINUTES AFTER BIRTH & WALK IN 4 HOURS.

ACCORDING TO RESEARCH:
A FAWN'S HEARTBEAT WILL TEMPORARILY  DROP & BREATHING IS REDUCED WHEN ALARMED.  THIS REDUCES THE POSSIBILITY OF PREDATORS DETECTING THEM.

AFTER 6 DAYS OR SO, A FAWN IS ABLE TO RUN FROM A HUMAN RATHER THAN JUST FREEZE & HIDE.

COYOTES ACCOUNT FOR UP TO 70% OF FAWN PREDATION.

BLACK BEARS WILL OFTEN VISIT A KNOWN FAWN AREA ANNUALLY TO LOCATE POSSIBLE NEWBORNS.

TWIN FAWNS ARE HIDDEN IN SEPARATE LOCATIONS.  SO IF DISCOVERED, THEY AREN'T BOTH IN DANGER.

A DOE CAN NOT IDENTIFY HER FAWN BY APPEARANCE OR SOUND, ONLY BY SMELL.
